Sturbridge Rotary is pleased to announce the six winners of the 2015 Rotary Scholarships. Each student will receive $1,000 upon completion of their first college semester with a 3.0 GPA. Over the past 42 years, Sturbridge Rotary has awarded nearly $200,000 in scholarship funds primarily to students from Tantasqua Regional High School. “There are many factors taken into consideration when reviewing the applications that we receive: need, motivation, responsibility, community participation, does the applicant work, family financial support, and of course, grades,” said Beverly Gray, Chair of the Scholarship Committee. “It’s a very difficult decision for the committee because so many of the students are deserving,” said Gray. The funds for the scholarships come from the lottery ticket basket fundraiser held each fall.
The six students from Tantasqua are Samuel Allen attending the University of Vermont, Caroline Concesion attending Marymount Manhattan College, Alexander Farland attending Bridgewater State, Tanner Perry attending the University of New England, Andrew Tichy attending Bowdoin College, and Bailey Waterman attending WPI.
Rotary hosts each student and their parents at a regular Rotary meeting where they meet all Club members. The students discuss their educational goals and career aspirations. Unfortunately three of the students could not attend the meeting as they were at their college orientations. Shown left to right are: Alexander Farland, Caroline Conceison and Bailey Waterman.
