Comm. Ave Bridge Replacement and the Impact to Mass Pike Travelers
The Commonwealth Ave. bridge construction project is anticipated to have a massive impact on vehicular travel including businesses and commuters from the Central Mass region.
The Chamber reminds you that the bridge project is slated to begin this Friday, July 28 at 9 pm and will likely impact your travel to that area.
Phase One | July 28 - Aug. 2
What: Mass Pike eastbound traffic diverted to the westbound side of the Mass Pike – creating two lanes of travel in the eastbound and westbound directions, separated by a “zipper” barrier.
When: Beginning Friday, July 28 at 9 pm through Wednesday, August 2 at 9 pm.
Where: the eastbound traffic will be diverted westbound at the Allston interchange and rerouted back at Beacon Street overpass.
Phase Two | Aug. 2 - 7
What: Mass Pike westbound traffic will then be diverted to the eastbound side – again, creating two lanes of travel in the eastbound and westbound directions.
When: Beginning Wednesday, August 2 at 9 pm through Monday, August 7 at 5 am.
Where: Westbound traffic will be diverted at the Beacon Street overpass and rerouted back at the Allston interchange.
On both Friday, July 28 and Friday, August 4 at 11 pm commuter rail service along this section of the Worcester-Framingham Line, will be shut-down for the weekend to facilitate the bridge reconstruction over the commuter line tracks.
Additional Lane Restrictions
July 28 – August 1 from 7 pm to 5 am
• Eastbound lanes will be reduced to 1 lane.
• Westbound lanes will be reduced to 2 lanes.
August 2 - August 7 from 7 pm to 5 am
• Westbound lanes will be reduced to 1 lane.
• Eastbound lanes will be reduced to 2 lanes.
The Chamber encourages those who have business travel into Boston during this time period to consider using alternative transportation (commuter rail service during weekdays) or plan ahead to mitigate significant traffic disruption.
