Event Description

Old Sturbridge Village is hosting a full-day Woodworking Forum focused on the techniques of 19th-century cabinetmaker Nathan Lombard and his contemporaries on Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The forum will also feature a special presentation during lunch from Old Sturbridge Village trustee Norm Abram, host of “The New Yankee Workshop” and master carpenter on “This Old House”, which is included in the event cost. The Old Sturbridge Village Woodworking Forum costs $65 per person to attend ($55 for OSV Members and North Bennet Street School students and alumni).  Registration for the forum is available online.

The forum coincides with Old Sturbridge Village’s current exhibit, Delightfully Designed: The Furniture and Life of Nathan Lombard, on view until May 4, 2014. Lombard was a notable cabinet and furniture maker known for his extraordinary inlay work. With 15 of Lombard’s furniture pieces on view, this exhibit presents the largest reunion of his pieces since they left his workshop in the early 1800s.

Abram will present an overview of the rich traditions of rural New England cabinetmaking during a lunch presentation. Additional presenters will cover a range of topics about the history, design, and construction of New England furniture. Freddy Roman, woodworker and president of the New England Chapter of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, will discuss and demonstrate aspects of his re-creation of a Lombard chest of drawers and drop-leaf table owned by OSV. Steve Brown and Will Neptune, representing North Bennet Street School, will discuss and demonstrate the construction and carving techniques used on the legs and column from the Lombard candlestand.

Christie Jackson, OSV’s Senior Curator of Decorative Arts, will give a talk exploring Nathan Lombard as a cabinetmaker, family man, and community member – including recently unearthed connections to other local cabinetmakers in the Sturbridge area. OSV’s Curator of Mechanical Arts, Tom Kelleher, will take forum attendees on a “Trees of New England Tour” to look at some of the more common trees in the southern New England forest, many of which were historically used in furniture production by local woodworkers.

Ongoing tours of OSV’s sawmill, which is erected on the site that David Wight Jr. (1761–1813) first prepared in the 1790s, will also be offered throughout the day.

Full details of the workshop and registration are available at www.osv.org/event/woodworking-forum.
