Insights on aging, elder care is Community Business topic
Adults caring for aging parents or impaired family members often struggle to balance independence and safety. At what point does Dad give up the car keys? When is the right time to step down to a smaller home or a living situation with more supervision?
When age-related health problems and even dementia prevent good decision-making, we may find ourselves stepping in to make those decisions for our loved ones. Psychologist David D. Nowell will provide an overview of what families need to know about competency, capacity, and guardianship as guest speaker at the Community Business Associates morning meeting on Sept. 27.
In his topic, “Competency and Functioning in Aging: What You Need to Know, ” he will also emphasize the stress of managing the increased risk of impaired family members in areas such as driving and managing money, and doing that with kindness to ourselves and our loved ones. There will be time for Q & A as well.
In private practice since 1999, one of Dr. Nowell's passions is the translation of neuropsychological and brain research to understandable terms to help people solve real problems, whether for patients and families he sees in the hospital or outpatient setting or for organizations that refer clients to him for consultation. Dr. Nowell also offers workshops and retreats in his Worcester-based practice.
Community Business Associates welcomes business and professional visitors to attend as guests at no charge, and to make fruitful business contacts along with hearing presenters and speakers.
The meeting, in the Oliver Wight Tavern at Old Sturbridge Village, runs from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. CBA is a networking/referrals program of the Central Mass South Chamber of Commerce. For more information, visit www.communitybusinessassociates.org
