On Monday, July 24, the Cohasse Country Club in Southbridge will again host the Rotary Club of Sturbridge for its eighth Charity Golf Classic. Club President and Chair of the event, Dave Zonia reports that the field of 64 golfers is filling up and for the second year in a row this prestigious event looks to be sold out. The day begins with a 10:30 AM shotgun start, a BBQ lunch on the course and a prime rib evening meal followed with auctions and the awarding of prizes.
All proceeds from the event will be used to fund Sturbridge Rotary’s charitable activities to empower youth, improve health, provide scholarships, and whenever possible, answer needs in the local communities. Just this past June the Rotary Club awarded $6,000 in scholarships to Tantasqua students bringing the total of scholarships awarded in the last 44 years to $194,000. We have also donated $4,100 this past year to those needing food assistance served by the J.P. II Food Pantry. Our Club also continues working to support initiatives worldwide such as phase two of providing needed medical equipment and training to a hospital in Kosovo.
This year the Club welcomes three new major sponsors, Old Sturbridge Village, P.J. Keating and Southbridge Credit Unions’ Sturbridge office who join with continuing major sponsors Cornerstone Bank, the National Guard Association and Safety Source – Northeast. Many contributions will also be recognized for tee and green signs, signs posted in a memorial garden, along with many, many gifts for golfers and for the auctions.
New this year to the event is a Hole in One contest on a par 3 with success providing a $10,000 award. As in past years there will be contests for closest to the pin, longest drive and closest to the line with those prizes awarded in the evening. A special purchase of “play improvement” strings will be available for purchase as well.
Rotary club membership provides an opportunity to join other community leaders to take action on important issues affecting our community, our nation and our world. Members also have a lot of fun socializing and working together on service projects.
A few spots are still available for golf participants or to attend the social event. To inquire, contact any member of the Sturbridge Rotary Club or contact the Golf Chair at email@example.com or phone 508-335-4550.
