Our region has a long, proud history in manufacturing, particularly in the areas of optics and precision machining. With roots dating to the early 1800s, the region currently plays host to several national and international optics manufacturers with applications in the medical, military, security, space and solar technologies, and telecommunications.
Our precision machining capabilities include professional cutlery, custom metal fabrication, and high quality building tools, polishing devices and miniature fasteners. Anchored by Old Sturbridge Village and our setting at the northern tip of the Last Green Valley, the region also boasts an important tourism sector that celebrates our rural, small town character, serving as a gateway to New England and a hub for exceptional business conferencing.
Our area has also earned a reputation as a destination for world class dining. Visitors can find a myriad of fine and casual dining restaurants featuring a wide array of culinary styles. The Sturbridge Townships hosts a Restaurant Week each year in April to highlight the quality and diversity of our many unique dining establishments.
Finally, the Central Mass South region is home to eight community financial institutions, in addition to the national lenders. The eight local banks and credit unions all have commercial banking centers and have combined total assets of $3.6 billion. Loan capacity for these community institutions ranges from $2.0 million to $25.0 million. Many of these banks and credit unions are active SBA lenders.
