The Silver Tsunami: Aging Business Owners What Are the Options?
The Massachusetts Economic Development Council presents: “The Silver Tsunami - Aging Business Owners - What Are the Options?”. The morning will begin with an overview of the “Silver Tsunami” phenomenon and its impact on Massachusetts, especially Gateway Cities. Panel discussions will focus on the nuts and bolts of Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOP) and Co-Ops as succession strategies, and business owners will provide personal insight with case studies of both options. A round table discussion will give attendees an opportunity to talk about strategies that can be used in their own communities.
Things to Consider: • 83% of Small Business Owners have no exit plan for their retirement • 49% of businesses with 10 to 100 employees are owned by persons 55 years or older • Today, only 15% of small businesses are inter-family transfers • 70% of privately held businesses will be sold or change ownership within the next 20 years • Over 700,000 workers will be impacted by business sales and closures in MA.
