Sturbridge: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Park Rangers of East Brimfield and Westville lakes, the local trail committees of Brimfield, Holland, Sturbridge and Southbridge along with the Grand Trunk Trailblazers are in final preparations for hosting National Public Lands Day (NPLD) to be held Saturday Sept 29 for Westville, Southbridge, Brimfield and Sturbridge, from 8:30 am to noon.
NPLD is the nation’s largest one day event to encourage volunteerism to help support our public lands.
On Saturday Sept 29 at 8:30 am in Sturbridge, the trail committee will be focusing work on cleaning up and building trails on the Leadmine Mt property as well as installing signs and trail maintenance at Heins Farm. Volunteers are asked to meet at the trail head parking lot, 10 OSV Rd. A pizza lunch will be provided at noon.
On Saturday Sept 29 at 8:30 am in Southbridge volunteers are asked to meet in the Westville Lake Project Office at 200 Marjorie Lane joining the Grand Trunk Trailblazers, Corp of Engineers Park Rangers along with Southbridge trail committee members who will be working on trail tread improvements to sections of the West Street School trail, Community trail and recently built Heritage trail extension of the Grand Trunk Trail. Work on these trails also includes invasive plant removal and brush cutting. The Southbridge trail committee has a special need for small utility bucket type tractors to assist Heritage Trail Extension work. A pizza lunch will be served at noon.
On Saturday Sept 29 at 8:30 am in Brimfield volunteers are asked to join the Grand Trunk Trailblazers, Corp of Engineers Park Rangers and meet at 507 Five Bridge Rd the Trail head parking lot. Projects include trail side shoulder maintenance of weed whipping and trimming the trail shoulders and a second project of spreading fine gravel over a 600’ section of the GTT side loop trail. The Brimfield trail committee has a special need for small utility bucket type tractors to assist in this work. A pizza lunch will be served at noon.
Pre registration is requested. Walk in registration will be held at each area at 8:30 am. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves, water bottle, and wear appropriate shoes and clothes for the work and weather. NPLD will be held rain or shine (except for extreme wet weather).
