Guided walk along the Grand Trunk (“Titanic” ) Railroad / rail trail, Southbridge
Saturday November 1st, 10:00am to Noon
Westville Recreation Area, Southbridge
Free – all invited.
Join Opacum Land Trust member and historian Larry Lowenthal for a guided walk along Opacum’s section of the Grand Trunk Rail Road multi-use trail in Southbridge. The Grand Trunk Rail Trail is a very well maintained, flat, trail that winds along the Quinebaug River, and using the connecting Heritage trail the two paths link the towns of Southbridge and Sturbridge, Massachusetts. It is lined by forest and beautiful rock outcroppings – a perfect, easy mid-fall outing for the whole family.
Larry is the author of "Titanic Railroad: The Southern New England", and an authority on regional history, and particularly of the local rail roads. The Grand Trunk railroad was never completed, being the project of Charles Hayes, who went down with the Titanic – thus giving the rail line its nickname "Titanic Railroad".
Park at the Westville Dam recreation area parking lot, and look for the Opacum Land Trust sign and staff at the head of the trail just west of the parking area.
